Mechanised Harvesting of Broadleaved Tree Species in Europe

چکیده

Abstract Purpose of the Review The application cut-to-length (CTL) technology for harvesting and processing timber from broadleaved tree species is a challenging process, due to thick branches, stem sweep, forks high wood density. objective this review was describe current state harvester use characterise effectiveness mechanised forest operations mixed stands in Europe, paying particular attention productivity product quality aspects. An additional aim identify greatest difficulties associated with today indicate future challenges areas improvement. Recent Findings interest wider started after storm Lothar France 1999. Early experiences demonstrated that lower common when species, limitations delimbing frequency sweep. Initially, modifications were made heads, while newly designed head (CTL 40 HW) later developed within European project 2005–2007. Using various very achieved some cases, but log recovery unsatisfactory, large tops left without delimbing. length inaccuracy observed, as well economic losses damage plywood caused by feed rollers. These issues resulted change construction, including work on patent specifically species. Summary heads have been date mainly used Central where incidence their morphological features (thick branches sweep) are major challenge CTL technology. There many research projects related issue: last 15 years, there few larger initiatives leading design development participation institutions universities France, Germany Poland. currently no ongoing initiatives, formation new ones strongly recommended because today’s forests growing share being managed an increasing extent

A Review of Mechanised Cane Harvesting Systems in Southern Africa

Manual harvesting has predominated in the South African sugar industry since 1948, when sugarcane was first cropped at Compensation on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. However, as successive generations of labour have attained higher levels of education and their living standards have improved, employment aspirations have risen above the strenous but monotonous hand cutting of sugarcane, and t...

Allometric biomass equations for 12 tree species in coniferous and broadleaved mixed forests, Northeastern China

Understanding forest carbon budget and dynamics for sustainable resource management and ecosystem functions requires quantification of above- and below-ground biomass at individual tree species and stand levels. In this study, a total of 122 trees (9-12 per species) were destructively sampled to determine above- and below-ground biomass of 12 tree species (Acer mandshuricum, Acer mono, Betula p...

Trials Comparing Semi-mechanised and Chopper Harvesting Methods over Three Seasons in Swaziland

The South African Sugar Association Experiment Station, Agricultural Engineering Department conducted a series of semi-mechanised versus fully mechanised harvesting trials on a large commercial estate in Swaziland over the 1998/1999, 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons. During the trials machinery performance was measured, differences in the quality of cane delivered to the factory were determined,...

Lutein epoxide cycle, light harvesting and photoprotection in species of the tropical tree genus Inga.

Dynamics and possible function of the lutein epoxide (Lx) cycle, that is, the reversible conversion of Lx to lutein (L) in the light-harvesting antennae, were investigated in leaves of tropical tree species. Photosynthetic pigments were quantified in nine Inga species and species from three other genera. In Inga, Lx levels were high in shade leaves (mostly above 20 mmol mol(-1) chlorophyll) and...
